Program Descriptions
The KNS offer morning and afternoon programs for pre-schoolers as well
as an after-school program for kindergartners. The programs are
play-based and arranged into the following activity areas:

Indoor Areas
- Art, Cooking and Writing Area
- Manipulatives, Home Living, and Dramatic Play Area
- Music, Movement and Science Area
- Blocks and Dollhouse Area

Outdoor Areas
- Swings
- Sandbox
- Play structures
- Tricycles, balls and sports equipment
- Arts and crafts

The curriculum is based upon a combination of planned themes and
children's interests. The KNS approach embraces the idea of the
emergent curriculum, where the teachers follow the lead of the children,
adjusting to individual needs as required.

Staff and Participating Parents plan monthly curricula based on an annual
calendar with broad-based themes. Specific daily, weekly or monthly
programs covering the curricular areas of art, science, language, math,
and social development are then developed based on these themes.
Daily themes are carried out in a continuous fashion for both the morning
and afternoon programs. Children are encouraged to participate in all the
planned activities as well as choose an activity of their own.

Morning Preschool Program
The morning program begins with a large group activity for a short period
and then children are free to choose from a variety of indoor and outdoor
activities. Specific time is also designated for outside play. Children meet
in small groups for snack and lunch time, enjoying stories read by a
teacher or parent. Enrichment programs include music, dance and
movement and cooking.

Afternoon Preschool Program
The afternoon program provides a full program for afternoon
preschoolers, continuing activities for full-timers, and an after-school
enrichment program for kindergartners. The afternoon program begins
with a choice of outside or inside play. Younger children participating in
the morning program are given an opportunity to nap or rest quietly in a
separate room. Circle time, a large group activity, takes place in
mid-afternoon, followed by snack time and stories in small groups.
Toward the end of the day children play inside, settling into quieter
activities. Enrichment programs include carpentry, sewing, music,
science, and cooking.

Kindergarten Walk-Down (KWD) Program
Kindergarten children are met at Kensington Hilltop School and an adult
walks them down to KNS for lunch time and afternoon activities. The
kindergartners and older preschoolers participate in more advanced
projects and activities, including field trips. The KWD program aids
kindergartners in their transition from pre-school to elementary school
and provides a childcare solution that complements the kindergarten
class time.
